What an I-485 rejection notice is
USCIS uses Form I-797C, Notice of Action, to tell you that a filing was received or rejected. A rejection notice means USCIS did not accept your Form I-485 for processing. In USCIS's words, it does not consider a rejected request to be properly filed. The notice explains why, so read the reason before you do anything else.
Rejected vs denied
| Question | Rejected | Denied |
|---|---|---|
| Was it decided? | No. It was returned without being fully considered. | Yes. USCIS decided it. |
| The fee | Returned with the request, in USCIS's practice. | USCIS keeps it. |
| Filing date | Not kept. A corrected filing gets its own date. | It had one. A new filing gets its own date. |
| Appeal | Not possible. Correct it and file again. | The denial notice says which options exist. |
| Notice | Form I-797C, with the reason. | A written decision with the reasons. |
Reasons USCIS lists for rejecting a filing
USCIS's Policy Manual names these and says its list is not complete; the I-485 page adds the signature, edition and medical exam rules:
- The fee: missing, in the wrong amount, or a payment that was declined. For Form I-485 the fee is $1,440 on paper or $1,390 online for applicants 14 and older (Form G-1055, checked October 9, 2026). For paper filings, USCIS no longer takes checks or money orders unless you qualify for an exemption.
- The signature: missing or not valid. USCIS says it will reject any unsigned form.
- An outdated form edition, or pages missing or taken from another edition. Since September 18, 2026, USCIS accepts only the 09/18/26 edition of Form I-485, with no grace period.
- An incomplete request, such as required fields left blank.
- No medical exam form when you need one: if your case needs Form I-693, it goes with the I-485, or USCIS says it may reject the I-485 (the medical exam guide).
- An error in the main applicant's filing: USCIS can't process family members' filings that depend on it.
USCIS also changed where to mail Form I-485 on October 7, 2026. Check uscis.gov/i-485 for the current address and edition before you file.
What to do after a rejection
- Read the reason on the rejection notice.
- Fix it with the current form edition, its instructions, the current fee and the current filing address.
- File again. USCIS treats it as a new request: it needs new fees and gets its own filing date.
- Watch your deadlines. Because a rejected filing keeps no date, timing can matter if your status or a deadline depends on when you filed. An immigration attorney or accredited representative can look at your situation.

How a rejection can show in your case status
Your case status may say the case was rejected and name the reason. When the reason is the fee, see Case Was Rejected Because Of Incorrect Or No Fee. Every other status message is explained in every USCIS case status meaning. Once your corrected I-485 is accepted, CaseStatusAPI reads the case history in your own USCIS account and explains each step in plain English.

Frequently asked questions
Is a rejection the same as a denial?
No. A rejected request is returned without being fully considered because it did not meet a filing requirement, and it can be filed again once corrected. A denial means USCIS decided the request; USCIS keeps the fee.
Can I appeal a rejected I-485?
No. The regulation says a rejection of a filing with USCIS may not be appealed. You can correct the problem and file again.
Does a rejected I-485 keep its filing date?
No. A rejected request does not keep a filing date. A corrected filing is a new request with new fees, and its date is the day USCIS receives it.
Where does the rejection notice say why?
USCIS uses Form I-797C, Notice of Action, to tell you a filing was received or rejected. Read it for the reason before you file again.
Which I-485 edition does USCIS accept now?
Since September 18, 2026, only the 09/18/26 edition. USCIS rejects the 01/20/25 and 09/04/26 editions, with no grace period. Check uscis.gov/i-485 before you file, since editions change.
How do I know if my case was rejected for the fee?
The notice names the reason. Your case status may name it too.
