What is an IOE Case Status?
If your USCIS receipt number starts with IOE, your case is handled in ELIS, USCIS's electronic case system. Under the hood, USCIS handles IOE cases as digital records rather than physical folders. This change impacts everything about how your case progresses. Offices still make the decisions, but an electronic file can be moved between offices without shipping paper, so an IOE case can be handled by any office.
IOE vs. Legacy Receipt Number Prefixes
Historically, the first three letters of a USCIS receipt number identified the physical location where the case was received and processed. IOE changes this model completely.

Because paper-filed cases (EAC, WAC, MSC, etc.) are tracked on a legacy database, they do not expose the internal JSON API endpoints. How to Check Your IOE Case Status
Depending on how much detail you want, there are three distinct methods to check your current IOE case status:
Method 1: Public USCIS Case Status Online
The standard method is to enter your 13-character IOE receipt number into the public USCIS Case Status Online portal. This gives you a high-level status message (such as "Case Was Received" or "Card Was Delivered").
Method 2: myUSCIS Online Portal
Logging into your personal myUSCIS account gives you access to a timeline view, electronic copy of notices, and upload boxes for requests for evidence (RFE).
Method 3: CaseStatusAPI (Hidden API Tracking)
Because IOE cases are electronic, the myUSCIS portal queries a backend API to load your page. CaseStatusAPI lets you pull this raw API response directly. Fetching this data allows you to read details that USCIS hides from the visual interface:
- Active Location: The code of the physical service center currently holding your file, even if your official notice lists a different location.
- Silent Updates: See when your case record changed (the internal `updatedAt` date) without a new public status. The record doesn't say what changed.
- Notice History: View generated receipt and approval notices in the system before they are mailed to your physical address.
Where is My IOE Case Being Processed?
One of the most confusing things about an IOE case status is finding where your case is physically located. With legacy prefixes, the location was locked. For IOE cases, your case can be routed anywhere depending on service center workloads.
To find your actual processing location, look at the bottom of your initial Form I-797C receipt notice. However, keep in mind that files are frequently transferred behind the scenes. If you perform an advanced API check, the location field (e.g. `location` inside the JSON response) will show you the exact code of the center holding your case file. IOE Case Transfer: What It Means
Because IOE records are digitized, USCIS shifts workloads between locations at will. If a service center is backlogged, it can batch transfer thousands of cases to another office.
When a transfer occurs, the public status tracker will eventually update to say "Case Was Transferred And A New Office Has Jurisdiction." However, the internal API's `location` flag or receipt notice queue will often show this transfer days before the official notice is mailed out. How Long Does IOE Case Processing Take?

What to Do When Your IOE Status Is Stuck
If your case has had no public updates for over 6 months, it's very common to feel stuck. However, checking the raw database via the API often reveals that your case isn't static. Background checks or file movement are frequently registered as silent updates.
