What is an IOE Case Status?

If your USCIS receipt number starts with IOE, it means your case is processed in the online ELIS portal. Under the hood, USCIS handles IOE cases as digital records rather than physical folders.

This change impacts everything about how your case progresses. Physical service centers still handle the ultimate decision-making, but files are shared instantly across the national network. As a result, IOE cases can be transferred between centers dynamically to speed up processing times.

How to Check Your IOE Case Status

Depending on how much detail you want, there are three distinct methods to check your current IOE case status:

Method 1: Public USCIS Case Status Online

The standard method is to enter your 13-character IOE receipt number into the public USCIS Case Status Online portal. This gives you a high-level status message (such as "Case Was Received" or "Card Was Delivered").

Method 2: myUSCIS Online Portal

Logging into your personal myUSCIS account gives you access to a timeline view, electronic copy of notices, and upload boxes for requests for evidence (RFE).

Method 3: CaseStatusAPI (Hidden API Tracking)

Because IOE cases are electronic, the myUSCIS portal queries a backend API to load your page. CaseStatusAPI lets you pull this raw API response directly. Fetching this data allows you to read details that USCIS hides from the visual interface:

• Active Location: The code of the physical service center currently holding your file, even if your official notice lists a different location.
• Silent Updates: Check if a USCIS officer modified your file (logged via a change in the internal `updatedAt` date) without changing the public-facing status message.
• Notice History: View generated receipt and approval notices in the system before they are mailed to your physical address.

Where is My IOE Case Being Processed?

One of the most confusing things about an IOE case status is finding where your case is physically located. With legacy prefixes like EAC (Vermont) or SRC (Texas), the location was locked. For IOE cases, your case can be routed anywhere depending on service center workloads.

To find your actual processing location, look at the bottom of your initial Form I-797C receipt notice. However, keep in mind that files are frequently transferred behind the scenes. If you perform an advanced API check, the location field (e.g. `location` inside the JSON response) will show you the exact code of the center holding your case file.
